ASEAN FMs had done well in attending the
Retreat called by Myanmar in Yangon. It has also tried to indicate to the
world it is still a relevant regional organisation. However, it has not answered
two pertinent allegations; namely how it wants to deal with the allegations of
atrocities committed by Myanmar military and the many deaths of civilian
population as well as cases of rapes; secondly the time line was not mentioned
on when the humanitarian assistance could move into the affected areas. ASEAN
FMs should not accept that all the stories and reports are not true or
fabrication. This would help Myanmar and ASEAN to regain credibility. The
reports coming out from the affected areas are still showing gross human rights
abuses. There must be explanations to all these allegations. Maybe they
should let the international community know why thousands of people fled to
neighbouring countries. Even the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) has expressed disappointments on the lack
of concrete actions to handle the humanitarian crisis.
