BUMI GERSANG

Bumi gersang
Kering kontang tanah merkah
Langit mendung awan gelap menudung
Makhluk berbagai berasak bergegas lindung
Ramai ternganga menadah tuah
Bila gersang akan sudah
Suara bicara tanpa suara
Hilang bijaksana
Telinga terbuka tanpa dengar
Mata terbuka besar
Berlegar putar
Tapi tidak terlihat apa berada di sekitar
Hidung menghidu namun kau tidak terbau
Sudah bercampur aduk setiap kejadian
Walaupun kau sibuk berpidato
Tiada yang faham bicara
Kepala berputar tiada bijaksana
Aku bingung hala tuju
Walaupun kata2 mu beribu- ribu
Himpunan tetap keliru
Haru biru
Bicara tidak di jawab
Wallah hu alam bisawab
Aku mencari pada angin
Supaya meniup awam hitam
Menghilang kan kabus gelita
Menunggu terang memancar cahaya
Teduhan hijau hijauan kembali segar
Mentari menyinari dan pancuran air mensuci
Bumi ini
Mendingin kan kehangatan
Gempitan ketenangan
Menyejuk hati dan jiwa dengan keamanan
Akan beredar membawa perubahan
Aku bermohon pancaindera menyelaraskan bijaksana
Seirama dan senada membawa pergerakan.

INTEGRITY, TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Today we are inundated with the issue of how a public officer should perform their responsibilities in the context of integrity, transparency and accountability as espoused by the UN. In this regard the UN defines integrity as honesty or trustworthiness in the discharge of public duties so as to avoid corruption and the abuse of power. Whilst transparency means availability of information on decisions and performance of public officials to members of the public. Accountability would mean the obligation of reporting the usage of public funds and answerable for failure to meet stated performance objectives. These requirements for maintaining standards must be approached holistically as integrity, transparency and accountability are the core element of governance which is essential in the fight against corruption. The struggle to get rid of corruption is not only an end itself but it is the necessary value in any government reforms to bring a better future for the people.

CABARAN HARI INI

Wallahhualam. Allah saja yang lebih mengtahui.

THE OLD DAYS

I remember my days in the Cabinet under Tun Mahathir.. As a new kid on the block the first few meetings I just watched and listened to our seniors engaging and interacting in the Cabinet....people like Ling Leong Sik, Samy Velu, Lim Keng Yik, Daim, Rafidah, Sulaiman Daud, Mohammad Rahmat, Sanusi, Najib, Anwar Ibrahim and Abdullah who was appointed slightly later after being in the wilderness for a few years to name but a few...very interesting and colourful characters...Mahathir had a team, a formidable one....we had different issues and challenges...no matter how difficult it was the party and government tackled it together....we discussed intensely and we supported him all the way.

That was the time when I felt collective responsibility was not only mentioned but practise faithfully. Anyone who went out of line Mahathir would give a reminder hard or gentle depending on the issues. Albeit it was a team. The economy grew well and political stability was intact. This allowed Mahathir to play an assertive role at the global stage and put Malaysia on the map of the world like a grand chess master...we knew who was the Captain of the ship...Mahathir had Tun Musa as his deputy under the banner of 2M but obviously there was no such thing as co-equal in the Cabinet System with a PM at the head. When Musa built up his image and try to be as good as Mahathir hell broke loose...Musa had to resign.

He resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Presiden... Mahathir brought up the crisis to the Supreme Council before formally accepting the resignation. We discussed the subject almost up to Subuh and everyone had the oppurtunity to speak..The outcome is history...but it was decided that Musa's position as Deputy President should remain intact as he was elected in this position by the party grassroots. The part and government was solid and intact with Mahathir...This was also the beginning of a split within the party and the birth of Team A and Team B. I was not in the Cabinet but in the Supreme Council..Tengku Razaleigh and Musa came together...to challenge Mahathir and his new deputy Ghaffar Baba and Anwar was the Youth Head. Mahathir and his team won by a narrow margin.

After that Mahathir consolidated the party and government consequent upon the party bring declared illegal. A new umno was born. After Ghafar Anwar with the solid support of Mahathir and his team ousted Ghafar like a whirlwind...Anwar was so strong after being deputy that he tried to take over as the number one behind Mahathir's back even though he was planned by Mahathir as the annointed successor. This created a political crisis but Anwar was ousted as he had sekeleton in his cupboard which allowed Mahathir to take action against him. But Mahathir explained at all levels of the party and government as well as the rakyat. It was tough but because the party and govt was with Mahathir the crisis was overcome at the back of the 1997/98 financial crisis. This was overcome because the party and government was with him. We went to the poll in 1999 and our Malay votes were affected but the non Malay voters supported BN and the party got two thirds majority. Abdullah Badawi was made the Deputy Prime Minister to succeed Anwar. In 2003 Mahathir after 22 years retired as PM. In 2004 Abdullah called for an election and won with the best result in the history of the country. But in 2008 when he called for the general election and with Mahathir against umno and BN the party won the election but lost its two thirds majority.

The pressure was for Abdullah to resign and handover power to his Deputy Dato Seri Najib....which he did in a smooth transfer of power....Najib formed his Cabinet with his team but he could not cover the lost ground of 2008 and in fact overall did worst than Abdullah. The opposition became very strong and the political battle became more intense. In 2014 Mahathir withdrew his support because he was unhappy with government policies. Later on with all the scandals being exposed Mahathir then campaigned all out for Dato Seri Najib to step down. This has now brought the country into a political and economic turmoil. Dato Seri Najib faced all kinds of challenges that no political leaders have faced before. He and his family being defamed and ridiculed in the most odious manner. Its not easy for any leader to take it...whilst still a PM. The perceptions on the party and government is at its lowest..we can sympathise with his problems. Let us pray to Allah that Dato Seri Najib is given the best guidance to take the option that's good for him, family and most importantly for the nation. Allah safe Malaysia.

REMEMBERING MY FATHER

My dear father.....was a fantastic orator and had good sense of humour....with the background of a teacher in Aljunid S'pore and Islah Arabic School in Kota Baru, even after he left teaching he liked to gather the young either in the house or outside listening or talking to them..He is quite open to criticisms and giving his frank views on UMNO and the struggle of the Malays...Due to this he was branded an ultra by chauvinistic Chinese particularly LKY n PAP and the western media..His response was he did not care if he by championing the cause of the Malays was considered an ultra. But the irony is that he was the one tasked by the Tunku to go round the kampongs in Malaya asking the Malays to accept the concept of Alliance consisted of Malays, Chinese and Indians. It was for that reason Tun Sambanthan said that he was the most misunderstood man.

He served UMNO as Information Chief and twice as Secretary General. He was absolutely and totally loyal to UMNO and would not do anything to harm it. If he disagreed so strongly with the leader he took the option of resigning to save the party or government from disunity. He resigned as Information chief, Secretary General of UMNO...and as Junior Minister of Information.. But his respect and loyalty to Tunku and umno never shirk..i remember Allahyarham Dato Syed Nahar and Allahyarhamah Tan Sri Aishah Ghani and many others who told me that he was fearless in giving his views st supreme council meetings whether under Tunku or Tun Razak. I remember him telling us he refused to join the government or be an Ambassador because he wanted to be free...He had always said its better for him to be outside the government so that he could critisize the goverment without fear or favour.

He was a believer that it would not be right to disagree or criticsize openly the government if you are part of it....this same tradition was adhered to by Tun Dr Ismail and Tun Musa Hitam....He advocated that the party should control the government and be strong. Otherwise the government itself could be sustained. Today the party is so weak. For him should be the check and balance.....he criticised on seperation of Singapore, on family planning and on education system of the country as well as the passing of the University and Colleges Act...to curtail student activities.. Due to his courageous and fearless acts he was honoured the Pemuda gsthering in Selangor as the lion of umno....the story often it's forgotten not made by one man but the team that worked with and for him loyally and faithfully...the most important infusion of knowledge he gave us was on honesty and integrity..though many of the old leadersand members of umno may not be highly educated they were sincere and honest to the Malay cause....this is just a morning recollection. I am proud to be his son..

OUR LEADERS

I hear and see many people debate about freedom and democracy. Very good and inspirational when the discourse is on the subject of rights...in whatever form especially amongst the young who are the inheritors of the legacy the present generation would leave behind...we started off with the Tunku, followed by Tun Razak, Tun Hussein, Tun Mahathir, Tun Abdullah and Dato Sri Najib. I have the honour of meeting and knowing all of them. Each of our previous leaders have left their mark and legacy. They contributed to what we are today....Without their perseverance and patience we would not be a nation we are today...not perfect but all of us have benefited from their policies, free from internal and external threats..our economy grew and political stability maintained. We started with the Alliance party and until today the BN.

All along this country is built on the principle of compromise and accommodation. Its not a zero sum game. I also had the honour of serving Tun Mahathir and Tun Abdullah as a Cabinet Minister. Tun Mahathir was the one responsible for bring me into mainstream politic from the private sector. Tun Abdullah was a PM I served and a friend. Now under Najib I served in a statutory Agency. The two succeeding PMs were totally different in all dimensions from Tun Mahathir. He was tough but easy to serve...During Abdullah's time there were new dynamics.in the country..he came in with a resounding victory but left honourably under internal party pressure when Najib was the Deputy....Under Abdullah we see the system of government and the political environment was getting more free and the emergence of social media...On succeeding Abdullah Badawi Najib wanted to make more friends with the west and accordingly adopted a more democratic and free style approach.

What we are now experiencing is the outcome of Najib's liberal policies in politics and economy...The style of management has to follow suit such as on governance, corruption snd transparency. However the public who are more discerning now don't see it happening that way. We are witnessing more and more leakages whether intentionally or unintentionally of government information and even political transactions. Things have gone out of control and today as a result of these leakages even if it us quarter or half truths the public gets angry and critical, there is a crisis of integrity and confidence...everyone from the civil service to politics to business are affected....unfortunately the political masters or their advisors have not been able to manage them well....But this does not mean we should bring democracy and freedom on the street...Freedom must be exercised with responsibility...If chaos and turmoil is brought to the conflict theatre, then we and all the rakyat would suffer...I hope people who propagate freedom recognize that you cannot act extra legal or judicial to call for the overthrow of the government. Everything has to be done according to process and law....Follow it religiously especially this is not an easy time.

KETAWA SI TUA

Ketawa aku ketawa orang tua-tua,
Berpeluk tubuh dengan tangan-tangan yang dah lusuh,
Berbicara aku se se dan teliti
Memerhati aku tertumpu bertafakur
Hendak mengingat masa-masa suara garau kasar
Merenong sekitar mahu merakam ingatan
Tempat ini tempat aku mengira jarak
Udara bersih yang ku hirup
Dari tanah, bumi, hijau hijauan
Air air putih bersih mendingin seluruh tubuh ku
Masa itu fikiran ku tidak terbelenggu
Aku melangkah lagi mencari tempat-tempat yang aku kenal lagi
Namun semua sudah berrubah
Kalau dulu hak aku kini hanya nostalgia dulu
Hanya bingkisan kata mesra
'Tu pun sering terlupa untuk bijaksana
Aku senyum kambing terkenang masam manis cinta
Aku bukan lagi jejaka kacak
Tidak berminat di lihat segak
Mahu duduk dan berdiri sudah tidak pasti
Aku mengelilingi negeri dan tempat ini
Melukis dari mata sehingga ke hati
Pelik nya risalah insani
Fakir senyum dan ketawa berdekeh-dekeh lagi.
Akan ku pergi dan meninggal tempat ini
Segala gala nya tidak di bawa sekali.

GELOMBANG TANAH AIR

Gelora gelombang goncang
Gendang tombang...
Tiada sayang lebih bimbang...
Terlalu ramai jadi garang
Muka merah meradang
Hilang sudah hendak timbang
Tidak kira bumi merkah..
Pisau dan keris sudah terasah
Bersedia untuk berbalah
Bujur berlalu melintang patah...
Biar puteh mata jangan puteh tulang
Segala nya menjadi hambar
Tanah air ku sedang berputar putar
Ramai berkata tiada satu suara
Penyelsaian nya masih pudar
Mungkin kita lena tidak sedar
Amaran tsuñami telah berbunyi
Masing2 berpusu ke tepi pantai.
Gunung dan bukit tinggi tidak di cari
Merdeka tenggelam di telan bumi
Kalau lah dapat merendah diri
Pasti akan di temui penyelsaian sejati
Terikat dalam kasih sayang
Menanam budi.....
Entah aku yang bermadah fakir tidak mengerti...
Air mata membasahi pipi

MALAYSIA TANAH AIRKU

Now is the time we need to stay focus. Soon we will be celebrating our merdeka. We need to look back on how this nation was built through hard work amidst our differences and diversity. Whatever some people might say we have done well. This is the place that we can call home...The strength of the government is very.much dependent on the civil service that perform their task in implementing government policies in a fair and balanced manner. They are truly independent and neutral. Whatever happens on the political side the civil service has to go on... Now there is a perception that they are dragged into the political foray.

Speaking to very senior retired civil servants they are very unhappy with what is currently happening in the civil service and would like it to be reinstated to its original role...A lot of things are happening in the political side but let the investigation be completed and takes its course. We can't spend full time answering the blogs or the social media...but of course we can't ignore. The biggest task is managing our economy and don't allow it to slide without control. The policies are there and let the service implements what is best for our country...The slide of the ringgit is costing us a lot in many aspects and the stock markets are bad...property markets are not exciting either....the country's reserves have also gone down....let us work together to save the economy and our beloved country....Many of us have written or spoken, not because we are against the government. .but we are seeing danger signs...let us ensure governance, transparency and accountability...let us protect the institutions that are so important to our nation's well being and future..

TIME

Time passes by today and yesterday
Every second, minute and day, life ticking away
The months and years that's beautiful and those that bring melancholy
Nothing can stop and no time machine can reverse the times gone by
You try to catch the glimpses in your mind's eye
They encapsulate the memories of your story
You travel the journey the life cycle of many
You meet and part that's the reality
The inevitable and unstoppable
Those that make you smile and happy
There are times you try to dictate what it is to be
But in destiny you cannot see
You plan but God disposes
Which you can't predispose
You are at the command of your Maker
You look at the distance as far as your eyes can see
The sun, the moon, the stars take their turn
In a universe that is predetermined
Every being is subject to its consternation
In a sequence that shows the wonder of creation
Planet earth is in this cosmos of constellation
What we are and where we are not permanent
Everyone and everything is waiting for their turn...
Life and death is a sure constant
Change will happen for certain
Justice and injustice are the balance
As a vicegerent on earth each and every human
Love and forgiveness contain in your heart's possession
The middle path is the check and balance
To keep the cosmos and constellation
To move together in their sequence

KISAH FAKIR

Berjalan lah memijak bumi
Jangan mendongak kelangit tinggi
Khuatir terpijak duri bila melangkah nanti
Sezaarah mana sekali Allah mencatit pasti
Tiada yang terlepas dari di ungkap bakti
Wang dan ringgit tiada terdaya untuk membeli
Yang empunya Alkhaliq kekal selama.
Insan di ambang kuasa ingat dia lah Raja
Terlalai sebenar nya siapa dia
Banyak perkara Insan takbir tidak sempurna
Megah sombong di cakarawala pura
Di sulam senyum seribu dusta
Insan bermain di alam milik maha Esa
Kuasa dan takhta semua anugerahnya
Tiada yang Maha besar selain Nya
Insan dan setiap kejadian berada hanya seketika
Seraya berada di sanjung tinggi
Sayang mudah berubah walau bertimbun budi
Arash Allah mahligai kuasa
Begitu lah Insan merendah senantiasa
Yang kuat hanya Dia
Insan meminjam menghuni sementara
Jangan berlagak memakai kuasa Nya
Tawaduk tunduk berasa hina
Tidak terbuat zalim sesama manusia
Akan berjaya di alam dunia
Akhirat dapat kemuliaan tanpa sekatan
Itu lah coretan fakir Insan.

BERCELARU

Hari ini ratus ribu cerita
Di ungkil oleh yang tahu
Ketawa aku fikirkan pakar beribu
Mudah nya jadi berilmu
Tidak perlu pergi berguru dan cari buku
Kata saja setuju ataupun tidak setuju
Bicara saja dunia sudah bercelaru.
Kritik atau caci pemimpin bertalu
Kerana katakan aku lebih tahu
Semua di buat tiada arah tuju
Kata pemimpin di beri amanah tapi menipu
Akan dapat tepukan seribu
Lelaki wanita dalam umno
Bahasa tidak beralas hentam melulu
Air muka sudah tidak kira
Bukan dia punya
Jatuhkan jatuhkan suara bergema
Soa nya mengapa dia tidak dengar
Heran bagaimana tanah air tercinta
Hilang tamadun budi bicara
Tidak sabar tidak terkira
Hukum sudah di jatuhkan tanpa hakimnya
Tanah air tercinta bercempera
Di cakarawala politik manusia
Tiada lagi kata sopan setia
Ramai lahir wira maggi
Mahu di angkat ke mahligai tinggi
Negara dan bangsa tersungkur
Tidak perlu di fikir lagi...
Satu ini semua menjerit pergi
Pakar sudah sedia menganalisa
Itu sahaja masalah nya
Selesai yang itu saf bersatu
Tiada suara lain boleh bicara
Dalam hingar bingar negara bergelora
Ramai akan mengangkat senjata suara
Bila debu debu nya tenang di atas rata
Ramai lah akan menyusul bertanya
Aku telah berkorban mana labanya
Kelang kelibut menarek semua
Gambar apa yang yang hendak di tukar
Aku cari tumpu terlalu ramai berpekek
Juara
Hanya Allah mengetahui segala nya
Berebut lah macam2 wira
Minta selamat dan tenang semula.

SKY HIGH

Up in the mountains looming high
I stretch my arms up to the sky
I looked down the mountain slopes with gerrymendering valleys
The trees and foliage of exuberant colours
I inhaled the air rushing so pure
The oozing rivers and streams with its baggling sounds
My mind was filled with imaginations and illusions
My spirit and soul intoxicated tranquility
Lonely in this abyss of mystic beauty
I had climbed the slopes and hills
From the meadows far below
The hidden secrets of the forests captivate
The spirit and soul in the reason of the mind
This was the nascent of a journey
Many are the wonders in the creation of the Almighty
So exalted is He
For human to absorb and see
In the company of nature that surrounds me
I was overwhelmed with the feeling of being lonely
This mountain, valley and meadows with its mystery
Contains the epitaph of Allah's mercy
When I have none to tell the story
He is there to provide me comfort in soul and body
I opened the book of Al Ghazali and Nawawi
In the darkness of the jungle
I saw the light of the Quran and Hadiths
From the narration of Imam Shafie
I no longer feel abandon but free
As I find peace and security
Who understood the true me
This torch I will carry
Almighty has set me free from this treachery.

SEJAMBANG SAYANG

Terfikir aku bagaimana indah sejambang sayang
Sentuhan dua insan mencari singgahan
Di lapangan tiada kebencian
Di sulam bahasa memupuk sandaran
Saling bergantungan mengengam tangan
Bertutur menghembur murni
Mencantum hati mengikat budi
Adat dan hukum menjadi sendi
Di bawah naungan langit dan awan
Berteduh insan di atas bumi
Menepati janji berpanji setia
Menanam kasih membina sayang
Selamat lah agama bangsa dan negara.
Berjabat semula mengabung saf lurus untuk bermula
Sehingga akhirnya tanpa perlu aku bertanya engkau bagaimana

SEPARATION OF POWER AND DEMOCRACY

In a democracy we often hear the subject of the rule of law being debated. What does it mean.. To put it simply it means the law of the country should govern a nation, as against officials exercising power and make decisions according to their whims n fancies. The World Justice Project defines rule of law based on universal principles as follows:
  1. govt, officials, individuals and private entitles are all accountable to the law
  2. the laws are clear, publicized, stable and just to protect security of persons n property
  3. the enactment of the laws are accessible, fair n efficient
  4. justice are meted out by competent, ethical, independent and neutral officials.
The above mentioned will become check and balance against govt actions, allow the nation to free herself from corruption, we can have an open govt. When we guarantee fundamental rights the nation will enjoy order n security. Consequently enforcement is present in the delivery of civil and criminal justice. In a system where there is separation of powers between the three arms of govt i.e. the legislative, executive and judicial, this should ensure freedom and rule of law are respected by everyone in the position of power. Citizens and officials would feel safe and protected. This is why the rule law is an important prerequisite to sustain freedom and democracy.

BERHATI-HATILAH

This is what rule of law means....preventing abuse and injustice by those in power. Please don't test us to the limit of our conscience...I love this country and proud what it has achieved....the present govt need to maintain and sustain it through proper imagery, acts and projecting governance snd transparency.

QUOTATION FROM IMAM AL GHAZALI

To keep me going I focus on the need to improve my inner self and hopefully discipline myself in that process.

I found a good reminder from Imam Al Ghazali about our continuous struggle against self. He said your jihad should be on thirteen enemies you cannot see - Egoism, Arrogance, Conceit, Selfishness, Greed, Lust, Intolerance, Anger, Lying, Cheating, Gossiping and Slandering. If you can master and destroy them, then will be ready to fight the enemy you can see.

I was looking for the 13th he mentioned but could not find. Maybe its hidden somewhere...

SEARCH FOR KNOWLEDGE

I found a very interesting quote on authentic leadership when researching on Imam Al Ghazali from a corporate leader Bill George, former CEO of Medtronics:

"We need authentic leaders, people of the highest integrity, committed to building enduring organisations. We need leaders who have a deep sense of purpose and are true to their core values. We need leaders with the courage to build their companies to meet the needs of all their stakeholders, and who recognise the importance of their service to society."

" when something weighs against your conscience, give it up". Prophet SAW... Tarmizi Hadis 8.

"Remember it is the heart and not the body, which strives to draw near to God. By heart I don't mean the flesh perceived by the senses, but that thing which is sometimes expressed by spirit, and sometimes by soul.." Al Ghazali.

I think this is the best time to divert our attention to search for knowledge and away from the hustle and bustle of current polemics which never seem to end... Getting into a state of body and mental fatigue.

POLITICIANS

Some people feel depressed after retirement or when they are out of a job for whatever reasons. This is quite a normal phenomena especially when we were at the top of things. This is actually the time you will know who are your true friends. The true friends would stick with you hot or cold.. I have some experience of these.,,the people who would be with you...night and day.., come rain or shine. Those who were close to you due to your status or position, no matter how nice or committed they seem will quickly or slowly keep their distance or just disappear.

Some would go like the speed of thunder....you need to adjust before they overwhelm you with melancholy, disillusionment or frustration. A lot of people will blame it to human nature. Your true comfort is Allah and your family ,especially your life long partner i.e your wife. I have gone through this cycle many times so I can become an authority on the subject. The first time was, when I was suddenly dropped at the final hour from contesting a seat in the Parliamentary Constituency of Sg. Benut. I was at a complete lost as I had resigned from my comfortable job in Bank Bumiputra...(now only as a memory). My late mother said never mind Allah knows best and my wife was someone who I could rest my head on her shoulder. I had many financial obligations. I remember having to liquidate my ASN to pay off the Bank. It was hard but I managed. Fortunately I finally recovered when I joined my brother's legal firm.

The second time was, when I challenged Anwar Ibrahim for the UMNO Youth Head post. At that time in the early eighties Anwar was the darling of the government, party and media. Even the major segment of UMNO Johor made me feel like a refugee from outer space. I could not go to campaign to the divisions through out the country. No one dared to go against the most popular and charismatic leader who was supported by the top leaderships.I was almost like a pariah amongst the UMNO youth. I had to circulate my personal letter and my voice tape to call for support from the delegates of the divisions. Those who supported me also suffered as they were targeted and alienated. I salute them for their support and courage. Alhamdulillah I got 30% of the total votes. Those who supported me remained true friends until now. At that time only Tun Musa the Deputy President of UMNO then, Tan Sri Shahril and Dato Khalid Nordin at the national level supported me and many others at the Divisions level such as Hj. Jalaludin Kassim, S.Rahman, Datuk Roslan, Dato Abdullah Hasnan, Dato Zaini Japar to name but a few and many others. I straightaway became unacceptable and not invited by the Divisions. Many would deny this. It was only when Dr. Mahathir asked me to contest again in the 1990 and made me a Minister that I became popular and could win the UMNO Supreme Council seat...but because I have never been part of a camp particularly Anwar's and without money I could never win the VP position.

I was a Minister for almost 20 years under Tun Mahathir and Tun Abdullah Badawi. When Najib becomes PM he dropped me from his list of Cabinet Ministers without explaining why. That's of course the prerogative of the PM to do. From then I became unacceptable person within the government and the party. For one year I was not given to hold any position in any agency or related agency of the goverment or glc. It was a blessing in disguise as I had more time with my family and started to write again. As I could not submit my writing to any newspaper I created my own blog. This kept me sane and going. As I was considered unacceptable person even by my former colleagues and party stalwarts avoided or just excluded me from any of their functions or activities. I felt lost for a while. I was then given a letter to be the Chairman of the Pilgrimage Board for a period of two years and reported for duty to the Minister in charge of TH. Immediately after that I went for umrah as the new Chairman of TH at my cost. It was during the pilgrimage that the Minister called me that he had to cancel the appointment. He just said the PM would explain to me. The strange part was there was no letter to cancel or terminate the appointment. When I came back from umrah I was called to see the PM and it was him who told me that he wanted me to head a new organisation call SPAD. I asked him I have already got the TH letter. He just said he had no one to head this new body. He asked me to accept it. To cut the story short I thanked him. Now I have been renewed twice.

I was just an ordinary Chairman as provided by the Act. I was not like my other colleagues who were given Ministerial rank status. I did not make any noise and accepted what was given. I thanked the PM. But this did not change the fact that a lot of people still avoided me or did not include me in any of their invited lists. I think in Malaysia people quickly forget once you are out. Former Ministers are not even in the protocol list in official functions if you are invited. It can be a lonely life if you don't have true friends. After all I had been in Ministries like a professional and I did not have any company or business. Now I keep myself at peace with people who are in the transport industry. Politicians generally when out of office are considered to have nothing further to contribute. I am of course still lucky to have a position in SPAD which kept me busy. This is of course different from former PM's and DPMs . My true friends are still with me. From time to time we go for a chat or drinks. For those who are ardent golfers their retirements are filled up with golf and friends in the same circle. This is just a reminiscent for politicians to remember nothing is certain or permanent in life, status or power no matter how powerful we are.

LAYAR PERAK

CABINET RESHUFFLE

The Cabinet has been reshuffled with the intention of strengthening the government under Najib and collectivism, which is the essence of the system. THE PM also made it clear at this period of his leadership he needs loyalty more than anything else. This should be noted when assessing the government. He had also mentioned deliberately to thank Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Shafie Afdal and Hasan Malek and others who had served the government in the Cabinet. These personalities are important players in the party and government. Let they be treated with respect and honour. This is not the time to shoot yourself in the foot that could cause a rift between party members and the leaderships.

In fact it is a time for mending fences as the recent exercise has created all kinds of negative sentiments particularly in Johore. Johore is just not another state but a significant ground for the well being and health of UMNO as a whole especially in Peninsular Malaysia. It is pertinent that the current situation is not taken advantage by the opposition. From now and the next GE 14 is not that long. The focus should now be on rectifying the party weaknesses and bring about unity and cohesion of the party and government. This is of course a complex and difficult task, more so in bringing public confidence and turning negative perceptions to positivity...I have always thought it's necessary for the government to be seen humble as the PM repeatedly had said and willing to be transparent to share whatever information on issues of interest with the public...in a very consultative and proactive manner ...once the opposition has spin and the social media taken over the work the party and government is placed in a defensive mode..no battle or war is won on this basis. As politics is a game of numbers the ruling party must command the numbers.

It is also important for the team members to coordinate and articulate intelligently. No one in a maturing and participative democracy the country is going through should assume the party or the government has the sole possession of knowledge and wisdom. You must be popular and acceptable to the rakyat who is the final arbitrator of the government's position. Hijrah can only be meaningful and effective if we have made changes to ourselves. In our system there is no co-equal to the PM and he made this succintly clear. Zahid Hamidi is his chosen deputy and this should be understood. The political battle in UMNO has been won but the war is not over. We can only wish them the best and the nation be brought together in unison and political stability achieved to move to the next phase of building confidence, integrity and governance which the public is demanding.

KOTA CINTA

Bicara tentang cinta di kota hati
Hilang benci
Menanam sayang murni suci
Sayang tidak bisa di selidik kaji
Sebenar nya terkandung pada luhur jiwa
Tidak di belah tafsir
Setiap kata dan ayat makna..
Terletak sempurna sayang di mata
Di lubuk peristiwa
Bukan pada ungkap tak kena
Cari makna pada yang tiada
Manusia itu Insan
Imam Al Ghazali kata solat itu indah
Mati itu dekat
Hidup terlalu singkat
Hanya kasih meninggal ingat
Bila ada di pusara di tinta catat
Hanya nama yang lainnya lumat
Menjadi tanah asal kejadian
Sebelum ia hanya kenangan
Ukilan fakir di perjalanan

HUMANITY

In this time of trials and tribulations..I try to pen down a poem in English. I am a novice in this, as my mind and thoughts are deeply engraved in Malay. Albeit my mind is in a stormy state as I watched and observed what's happening around and beyond. this is how it reads in my unschooled manner:

I was searching for forms and directions
To speak my descriptions
Staring at the room aimlessly
The books I had read
Searching for meaning
the wilderness I'm surround
Feeling of love and charity
Between humankind of one
More thoughts poured into questions Emerging the images of justice
Concerns whether I'll be saying the right thing
As Rudyard Kipling
Or will I just be imagining
Of Khalil Gibran of love death and living
Something that is nothing
My thoughts travel in motion
Delving in philosophies and values
Looking for explanations
Of justice and humanity
Of Salam and Aman
Don't we see the signs in the climate and environment
Man in its faliabilty is in a state of confusion
What is in domination
In a manner of collision
On the lands and in the oceans
Asking for answers who is more sovereign
Between people and government
The response is certain
At times power and might
Caused the people to be forgotten
Many in ignorance what is right
Justice converts to might
I see on the outside
Anarchy engulfed the sky
I witness people speaking in a discourse
Many things have passed by
You can only hear the voices that cry
The ordinary man without shoes
Those on the bicycles
The villagers and urban dwellers
Innocent seeking answers
To stand on the land they love
In loyalty and dignity
Not to be rubbished by those strong and mighty
They talk about being free
Living in dignity and integrity
Not lustful and greedy
Seeking basic neccesity
In this passage of life journey
They are not asking for money
But for the love of the country
We have lost our spirituality
Hands clapsed together called for compassion and mercy from Almighty
Truth and justice
To govern and overcome falsity
The voices of power and might are loud and clear
People desire to disappear
To live in peace and tranquility
To be free to uphold justice and equity
To leave a legacy in the meadows and valley
To free the minds from confusion and worry
In comfort, content to be citizens of honesty
What would it be
For freedom to people and country
Government of governance and transparency
Sharing the ideal of sovereignty
The poor and rich
Standing in equality
The powerful and mighty
Salute the citizenry
Answer with responsiblity
Intelligence and accountability
My mind would then be calmed
To Almighty I will succumb

PEMIKIRAN MANUSIA

Ribut kemelut di kotak pemikiran
terasa muram, sedih, berkabung, bingung runsing,
entah lah ada sesuatu tidak kena,
tutur bahasa tidak sempurna,
budi tidak sopan,
hilang pada kealpaan,
adab sudah tidak padan....
heran lebih mengheran,
agama tinggal sebutan...
fitnah untuk kejayaan...
tuhan di fikirkan tiada kekuasaan...
fikiran jadi penentuan zaman..kezalliman ....
berbicara tentang budi diri....mengabui...
jahat baik baik jahat...perkara di lumrahi...
wahana baru alam semula jadi..
mencaci maki...palsu di benari...
bohong mesti.. tidak perlu di segani...
Ideologi anarki...tiada haram lagi..
akhlak dan nilai...kuat miliki...
kuat dan kuasa mewarnai
adil dan yang di adili...
makin bingung..sepanjang hari
bila tuhan pun tidak di takuti
tidak di peduli...mengeluh...
subahanallah berputar dan berlegar...
perubahan dan hijrah...
iring mengiringi...
leka, selesa berkuasa...
kotak fikiran ku terganggu...
aku tidak tahu..
hanya menunggu redha dan restu...
subahannah...alhamdulillah allahuakbar...
tetap memayungi setiap insani...

MALAYSIA AND BRITAIN

Yesterday I attended a reception organised by the British High Commission in honour of the short few hours working visit of the British PM to Malaysia after a successful tour of Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore. I was standing at the back of the hall full of Malaysian businessmen and officials as well as a big delegation from Britain who accompanied the Premier. I did not even have the oppurtunity to be near him but close enough to hear his short and succinct speech of the PM. I thought his remarks were an effective one marketing strategy seeking Malaysian investors to invest in Britain as they had done in the Battersea Project.

Based on the applause he received from the Malaysian audience obviously he was a popular and admired PM of Britain. I suppose Britain still has a lot of pulling factor to Malaysians. The bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Britain seemed to be strong and warm. This was clearly demonstrated by the Malaysian PM receiving him at the airport. On top of that accompanying him from the aircraft to the tarmack. Usually this was done by the Chief of Protocol of the host country. This is not normally done on a working visit. (I may be wrong here or out of date with current protocol). From the airport he was accompanied by the PM to his residence for a bilateral meeting and discussion. Again this showed the closeness of Britain to Malaysia.

The whole brief visit was well covered by the media locally and in Britain. However in Britain what was highlighted was not the business and investment objectives but on the the current Malaysian political environment. It seemed he expressed concerns on the issues of democracy, civil rights and liberties as well as corruption in Malaysia...By doing this he satisfied his critics who had demanded he cancelled the visit to this country. Many Malaysians are also asking about the British role in Myanmar on the human rights abuses and the denial of the rights of the Rohingya to take part in the forthcoming November election and the refusal of Aung Ann Su Kyi's NLD to field any Muslim candidate. I wonder whether PM was able as the Chairman of ASEAN to get the support of the UK government on this issue. Albeit this is the nature of the international system and order.

ASAM GARAM POLITIK

Wahwah....kota ku tinggal papan tanda
Sudah pudar tak dapat ku baca
Dalam benak ku bertanya
Tempat ini halaman tetanga
Berubah wajah dan rupa
Di huni oleh kabilah berbeza
Bahasa nya pun tidak ku fahami
Lidah kelu tiada suara
Mereka bergerak tidak sehala
Kucar kacir mengatur kerusi meja
Ada jamuan besar hidangan belum tersedia
Yang menunggu lapar mahu menerpa
Lampu menyuluh terang benderang
Tapi tak ku lihat tempat lapang
Terus bimbang bila nak tiba siang
Awan gelap angin kencang
Terlalu banyak kayu penghalang
Baik lah aku pulang

JESUS

Jesus said and indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path.

Jesus said, " I am a servant of Allah. He has given me the Book, and has made me a Prophet; And He has made me blessed, wheresoever I may be; and has enjoined upon me Prayer and almsgiving so long as I live; And He has made me dutiful towards my mother, and has not made me arrogant and graceless." Jesus was both a Messenger and The Messiah Allah had promised. May peace be upon him.

BECAREFUL

The image of the country has its own dynamics relating to politics, economics, security and societal to serve the national interest of the country. It is the responsibility of the leaders acting in the name of the state to promote and defend these vital interests in order to ensure her independence and sovereignty is not compromised. It does not then stop there. Malaysia likes other countries need to promote and defend her national interest to ensure her actions do not jeopardize parliamentary democracy or undermine freedom of speech or expressions of the citizens.

We must not be afraid of sharing and equally in the dissemination of information. Anything that's false or untrue the state should be able to counter and provide the true version of the story. Similarly any person that try to sabotage by disinformation or misinformation should be charged in accordance to the due process of law. It would not be wise to suspend or stop the publication of any newspaper for whatever reasons. The national interest of Malaysia in the area of politics, economics, security or societal could be jeopardized if the state acts in a way that is detrimental to these vital interests of the nation.

KEMELUT POLITIK NEGARA

HUMAN LIFE

There are many things in our life that affect or touch us personally in a negative or positive way. This caused us to react and might get disappointed or disillusioned with our lives. Such things happened in our daily lives, like the loss of our parents or dear ones...we would then regret for not being able to do more or be closer to them when they were around and still with us. These are regrets of time, once lost, could not be reverted. In the case of a shattered love it might have long term effects on how we look at future relationships. It could also happen when someone close betrayed you. The hurt is deep and the question that kept on popping out, "what have I done or what went wrong". You keep on asking the sincerity of the association or the materialism that governed it.

The incidences, events or episodes are part of the process of experience that we would go through in our lifetime. Some sweet and some bitter. It would definitely leave a lasting imprint on your life. In my case I am not so lucky at choosing friends. My problem I am too straight forward and never vindictive. I see people as they are and start to trust them. More often than not these so called "your trusted people" betrayed and stab you in the back in a way that you never expected or thought would be done. You ended up saying 'that's life'. In politics and business you can meet these kinds of people who are Machievelian without realising it. These paths are part of the maturing process. In my case more often than not it came too late...I met many people who are not loyal or faithful. In truth they are just using you to achieve their ambitions or objectives.

They would after getting what they wanted drop you like a hot potato. The best of friendships are those who became friends because they wanted to be so and didn't expect anything in return. This is of course not easy to find. Believe me Allah is kind and never abandon you. So don't loose hope. Saidina Ali r.a. advised us, in life never give up due to the disappointments but keep on the torch of hope burning under whatever circumstances. This would make our life meaningful. He also said, one should base friendships or associations on sincerity because this would cleanse and purify our lives in order to ascertain our place in heaven.

Finally Saidina Ali r.a said sincerity would make our actions better and allow us to be honest and truthful. This would prevent us from victimising anyone and would enlighten our hope. In other words don't be disappointed or be disillusioned with life that Allah has lent to us.

REMINDER FROM SAIDINA ALI R.A part II

I want to pen down what the fourth Caliph Saidina Ali r.a. said about the three things that would destroy life:
  1. Anger
  2. Arrogance
  3. Revenge
When we are overcome by anger we will loose our sense of balance.
When we are arrogant we will become boastful and proud.
When we practise revenge we will victimise others and not on the basis of justice but to do the same harm others inflict on you. This is inconsistent with the shariat of Islam.
God safe and guide us from these misguided behaviours.. Aamein.

MY LIFE AND POLITICS

I have been exposed to politics when I was a child prior to entering primary school. I was the guy that sat at the corner silently. My father and his friends were so absorbed in discussing with each other they just ignored my presence. I could see how dedicated and committed they were to the party even though my father did not have enough money to support our big family. He was the chief salesman for umno as an information chief. I didn't hear him complaining but he had tremendous passion and enjoyed what he did.

My dear mother would always be besides him supporting all the way. Again I didn't hear her complaining. But then it was a time when they struggled not for self but for religion, race and country. The Leaders might not be as well educated or qualified as the leaders of today and they were never arrogant or proud. They were simple, honest but acted with dignity. Time was not theirs and wealth was never the factor. They sacrificed a lot. My father could be gone for weeks visiting remote areas deep in the kampung that's difficult to access. They would walk, take a bus, bicycle or a sampan to reach remote areas. They were under a constant threats of the communist insurgencies or the wild animals of the tropical jungle.

All the way they struggled to give dignity to the the Sultans and the Malays. The beginning of the struggle it was the Malays..At the time the non Malays did not consider Malaya their homes but just as a temporary place of settlement. The British not wanting to land up with problems got the Malays to work out a power sharing formula. With accommodation and compromise we got our independence. The present generation should learn and appreciate our history and geography and build on it. We cannot return to the past but its good to build our future by understanding the past. People who became politicians then were honest and sincere. They did not seek wealth and glory. It was not unusual for those who were wealthy to contribute their wealth to the party...Tunku was one such example. I remember my mother had to struggle to make ends meet. She borrowed from the shopkeeper to feed us. My father had to take students to teach quran to earn a few extra dollars. They were happy with what they did because they loved the party.

The party leadership had very good camaraderie and fought for the party together. They laughed and cried together. They did not have greed and volunteered for the good of the party. No question about asking for money to be doing something for the the party. They did not ask for accommodations or to stay in a hotel. I remember my father used to stay in the house of Tok Penghulu or Ketua Kampung. If not he would stay in the kampung houses of the UMNO committee members. That was UMNO a very straight forward political party for all levels of the Malay society and yet always tolerant and moderate towards the other races. We had brought success to Malaya and then Malaysia. UMNO brought progress and development as well as political stability....That's history..

REMINDER FROM SAIDINA ALI R.A

A good reminder from Saidina Ali r.a for us as human being to ponder on...
  1. The first thing is the importance of time, which would not wait for anyone and gone forever when it passed us. It is thus important for us to value and manage time well.
  2. The second thing is about words. We should be mindful of what we say because once spoken it cannot be undone. In other words the hurt it might cause on others.
  3. Finally opportunity. We should remember not to let opportunities just go by because we may not have a second chance.
As I looked back on my own life I could feel the wisdom of these sayings. On many occassions we had just wasted our life by not respecting time or wittingly or unwittingly say something without realizing how it hurts or affects others. Similarly in the case when an opportunity came our way we ignored or didn't take advantage of it, be in business, politics or even in our personal life..This is just food for thought.

DIGITAL GADGET

Now this small Samsung note 4 gadget has become my most loyal and faithful friend. Everywhere I go it will always be accompanying me. Without it I feel somewhat lost...funny though I am not a person who likes to chat or receive calls..unless it is absolutely necessary. Most of the time when it rings its always someone inquiring about something or a journalist who wants some answers pertaining to my responsibility. Habitually I keep an open door policy. Even though this is a good policy but you do sometimes face some irritating characters. Otherwise I used the cell phone for tweeting and FB postings of my activities officially, family or personal activities. These prove to be fun and keep us up to date on the going on. I think this flat world has made us well informed as well as a targets for all kinds of abuses...people can use this for good or evil.for truth or lies. We can be.targets of malicious allegations ..but after a while one gets used to it...eventhough it can be vicious....i am always very happy that all of us become a student of google for better or for worse. Its a source for all kinds of knowledge. ...When i go to sleep its beside me other than my wife!!!!! and when I get up I stare at it...its the most unsociable invention to be introduced to mankind. Be careful what you post, it could go viral.

MASIHKAH KAU INGAT

Masih kah kau ingat
Lunak bahasa mu memikat
Kau memukau dengan wacana hebat
Lantas aku terus taat
Aku berkorban tenaga dan keringat
Waktu dan saat
Menjunjung mu sebagai penyelamat
Masih kah ingat gagasan membawa rahmat
Penyambung Risalah
Aku junjung penuh hikmat
Kau merencana wawasan merubah
Membela bangsa dan derajat
Masihkah kau ingat
Kami mengangkat mu bernobat
Memberi pangkat berdaulat
Kau menitis airmata hormat
Kau janji tidak akan khianat
Di mana juga kau berada
Kami mendampingi sama
Kami ingat mahu mencari
Masihkah kau ingat natijah bersama
Dewasa kau ramai pengiring mengelilingi
Aku di pinggir memerhati
Memang kau bukan nabi maklaikat dan wali
Sudah pasti tidak maksum diri
Tapi insan di pegang kerana janji
Membawa wadah suci
Masih kah kau ingat bersumpah tidak menodai
Namun aku fikir kau tidak ingat lagi
Kau sudah tidak kenal lagi
Hanya rafak ku masih kau ingat
Terus ku ulangi.
